Frequently Asked Questions
Honest answers to the questions most people don’t quite know how to ask.
Whether you are curious about hypnotherapy itself or want to understand exactly what working together involves, everything you need is below.
About Hypnotherapy
What hypnotherapy actually is.
If your only reference point is a stage show or a television documentary, what happens in a clinical session will surprise you. These are the questions that come up most often before a first session, and they deserve a straight answer.
Most people describe it as a state of deep calm, completely relaxed but still aware of everything around them. Some people feel they are simply listening with their eyes closed, others drift in and out as if almost asleep. How you feel is completely individual, and there is no right or wrong way to experience it. For many it is similar to that feeling just before you drift off to sleep, or when you are so absorbed in a good book that the rest of the room fades away. If you have ever driven a familiar route and arrived without being able to account for the last ten minutes, you have already experienced the same kind of state. Hypnosis uses that same natural capacity with intention.
Memory of the session varies from person to person. Some people emerge remembering everything clearly, only for it to drift away over the following hours, much like waking from a vivid dream. Others remember fragments, with more coming back gradually over time, often at unexpected moments. This is entirely normal and does not mean the work has not taken effect. What surfaces later, sometimes in dreams, is often the most significant, because dreams are closely linked to the processing and letting go that change work sets in motion. The changes happen whether the conscious mind holds onto the detail or not.
No. This is the most persistent myth about hypnotherapy, and it comes almost entirely from stage hypnosis, which is a performance discipline with nothing in common with clinical practice. In a stage show, volunteers self-select, social expectation does a great deal of the work, and the goal is entertainment. In a clinical session, the goal is your specific outcome, and nothing in that process can override your values, your judgement, or your consent.
How conscious you feel during a session varies. Some people remain clearly aware throughout. Others go much deeper, into a state called somnambulism, where conscious awareness recedes considerably. How deep we go depends on what the work requires. What does not change at any depth is that the subconscious mind remains alert and interactive at all times, and it will not allow you to act against your own values or wishes. That is not a safeguard that gets switched off the deeper you go. It is simply how the subconscious mind works.
Trance is something everyone enters multiple times a day. It is not a special state that has to be achieved, it is a natural one your brain moves into and out of constantly. What clinical hypnotherapy does is use that state with focused intention. But here is the thing: this is collaborative. The change comes from within you. It is not something I do to you, and trance is not something that happens to you against your will. Change is a choice.
The way it works in practice is that I guide you into trance, and when I ask you to imagine something, you imagine it. That is you working with me, not me working on you. Which means that if you decide you will not be hypnotised, you will not be. The only thing that actually prevents hypnotherapy from working is the decision not to allow it.
Yes, in meaningful ways. The research base for hypnotherapy on stress reduction, anxiety, sleep, and chronic pain is well-established, with multiple peer-reviewed meta-analyses showing consistent results across large populations. Brain imaging studies have demonstrated measurable changes in neural activity during hypnotic states, which moves the conversation firmly out of the theoretical. The research on direct cortisol biomarker reduction through hypnotherapy is more recent and still developing, but what is not in question is the effect on the physiological stress response and the systems it disrupts.
I do not overstate what the evidence shows. Where it is strong, I will tell you it is strong. Where it is still emerging, I will tell you that too.
Meditation and mindfulness work primarily at the level of conscious awareness, training attention and building a different relationship with thought. They are genuinely useful practices. Hypnotherapy works at the level below that, with the patterns, responses, and associations the subconscious mind has built through repetition and experience. This is where the body’s learned alarm responses live, and intellectual approaches cannot reliably reach it, which is why people who understand their own patterns completely can still find those patterns running regardless.
The two can complement each other. But if you have tried mindfulness or meditation and found it did not touch the deeper issue, that is not a personal failure. It is a limitation of the tool, not the person using it.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) uses gentle tapping on acupressure points while holding a specific thought or feeling in mind. The research suggests it reduces activation in the amygdala, which is the brain’s threat-detection centre, and it can process emotional charge on a stored memory faster than many other approaches. NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) works with the way the brain codes and represents experience, and how that coding drives behaviour and response. Breathwork uses controlled breathing patterns to directly influence the autonomic nervous system, moving the body out of sympathetic dominance, which is the high-alert, high-cortisol state, and into a more regulated one.
I use whichever combination is most appropriate for what is happening for you. Sessions are not formulaic because the people in them are not.
About the Work
What the programme actually involves.
Practical questions about the Cortisol Reset programme, how sessions work, what is included, and what to expect from the process.
The programme is three sessions, each up to 90 minutes, delivered online. Sessions are never cut short. Before we start, there is a free 30-minute Clarity Call where we talk through what is happening for you, what has and has not worked before, and whether this approach is genuinely the right fit. If it is not, I will tell you that on the call rather than take your time and money. Between sessions, you have direct WhatsApp access to me, which means that if something surfaces, something you remember, something that shifts, or a question you cannot wait to ask, you can reach me without waiting for the next session.
The investment is £350 for the full three-session programme.
We start with a relaxed chat about what has been happening, what you have noticed, and what you want to work on. Then I guide you into hypnosis, a calm and comfortable state where your mind becomes open to change. Depending on what you need, we might also use NLP, EFT, Kinetic Shift, Emotional Detox, or breathwork. I use anchoring too, a reinforcement technique that locks certain suggestions in so the changes carry forward into your everyday life.
Where it makes sense, I will give you something to take away: a breathwork technique to use when things spike, EFT to practise if we have used it together, or a journal to note down thoughts, feelings, or any dreams that surface. Nothing overwhelming, just ways to keep things moving between sessions. Most people come out of a session feeling refreshed and lighter, and often pleasantly surprised by how calm they feel.
The programme is three sessions, and that is intentional. It is enough to create real, grounded change without asking you to commit to an open-ended process that runs indefinitely. Most clients notice meaningful difference within that structure. If, after the three sessions, there is more you want to work on, we can discuss whether additional sessions make sense, but that conversation happens on the basis of what has already happened, not as a default next step.
The Clarity Call before we start is partly there to make sure three sessions is the right starting point for your situation. If you are carrying something that needs a different container, I will be honest about that at the outset.
Most clients notice something after the first session, often a quality of sleep that is different to what they have had for a while, or a response to something that would normally have spiked them that simply did not land the same way. The changes are cumulative across the three sessions, but the first one tends to do more than people expect. What I would caution against is expecting a sudden, dramatic transformation that you can point to and name. What tends to happen is subtler and more durable: the baseline shifts, the reactions reduce, the system stops running at the level it was running at.
All sessions are online, and the clinical outcomes are the same. Once your eyes are closed, location becomes irrelevant. What online sessions do offer that in-person sessions often cannot is the ability to settle into hypnosis in your own space, in a chair you already find comfortable, without the transition of a car journey or waiting room beforehand. Many clients find the results better, not worse, for that reason. You will need a quiet, uninterrupted space, a stable internet connection, and ideally headphones. I will walk you through the setup before your first session.
You do not need to recount events in detail for this work to reach them. Many of the approaches I use, including Kinetic Shift and Emotional Detox, can process and release the emotional charge attached to an experience without requiring you to revisit or verbalise it in full. The nervous system holds what the mind sometimes cannot access directly, and the work meets it there. I have a trauma-informed background that goes beyond theoretical training, which means this is not something I approach cautiously on paper and nervously in practice.
If there is anything in your history you want to mention before we start, the Clarity Call is the right place for that conversation.
Direct WhatsApp access is included as part of the programme. It is there because the work does not stop when the session ends. The subconscious mind continues processing, and it is common for things to surface in the days that follow: a memory, a connection you had not made before, a question about something that came up in session, or simply a change you want to report. Being able to reach me directly when that happens means nothing gets lost, and nothing has to wait for the next session to be addressed. I respond within a reasonable timeframe, and I will be clear with you at the start of the programme about how that works in practice.
Book the free 30-minute Clarity Call below. It is not a sales call with a script and a close at the end. It is a real conversation about what is happening for you, what you want to change, and whether this work is genuinely the right approach. If it is not, I will tell you that, and point you somewhere more useful. If it is, we book the first session from there.
